Positive Behavior Support (PBS)

The staff of Kent County Secondary Intensive Learning Center foremost is focused on assisting students to learn appropriate behavior and coping skills as well as academic content in the classroom. The school-wide expectations include: 1) Show Respect, 2) Be There, Be Prepared and 3) Follow Directions. These expectations are to be carried out in all areas of the school. To help students visualize what these expectations should look like in all parts of the program, the Positive Behavior Support staff created posters displayed in eight (8) areas- Bus, Bus Loading Area, Classroom, Hallway, Bathroom, Cafeteria, Assembly/Field Trip, and Emergency Situations with an explanation for each area. 

1. Classroom
Show Respect:
Use of appropriate language
Be attentive
Consider personal space
Follow Directions:
Complete classroom assignments
Participate and stay on task
Report all problems to the teacher
Request a hall pass
Be There, Be Prepared:
Be on time
Enter/exit in an orderly manner
Have supplies and assignments ready
Have point sheet at all times

2. Bus Loading Area
Show Respect:
Tolerate differences
Consider personal space
Speak quietly
Use appropriate language
Pants worn on waist
Follow Directions:
Follow request of bus driver/aide
Sit in assigned seat
Remain seated until dismissal
Exit bus at assigned stop

Be There, Be Prepared:
Be at bus stop on time


3. Bus
Show Respect:
Use of appropriate language
Keep hands/feet to self
Walk
Follow Directions:
Listen for dismissal
Stay on sidewalk
Be There, Be Prepared:
Have point sheet on departure
Board bus immediately
Collect personal items at dismissal


4. Hallway
Show Respect:
Keep hands/feet to self
Use of appropriate language
Maintain low voice volume
Pants worn on waist
Follow Directions:
Walk
Stay to the right, keep moving
Travel in assigned hallway
Be There, Be Prepared:
Report directly to destination
Have a hall pass


5. Bathroom
Show Respect:
Clean up after self
Use bathroom quickly/quietly
Use of appropriate language

Follow Directions:
Flush toilet/urinal
Wash hands
Return directly to class

Sign in/out from class
Report problems immediately


6. Cafeteria

Tolerate differences
Use appropriate table manners
Use of appropriate language
Consider others space/property

Follow Directions:
Enter/exit orderly

Have lunch money/code ready

7. Assembly/Field Trip

Students are also supported through the use of a daily point sheet which allows them the right to earn a successful day by staff awarding a zero or one to each fifteen minute division of the day within the three school-wide expectations and one area individualized for each student. These successful days, in turn, allow them the opportunity to progress through a level system.  The following levels pertain to both programs: Level One is five successful days; Level Two is achieved with 15 Days, Level Three with 15 days and Level 4 with 10 days.

At each successive level, more privileges are earned and incentives increase. As a student nears the completion of the program, a meeting is planned with their home district to transition them back to their school of origin.

During his/her tenure in one of the programs, students also receive other services necessary to help them succeed and maintain a positive forward movement on their return to their school of origin.
